Open Synagogue at Rosh Hashanah
the Jewish New Year.
The synagogue is open from 10am to 5pm.
Starting at 10 a.m., we will be showing Leni Riefenstahl’s film about the 1936 Olympics . In her two-part film (126 and 100 min) from 1938, however, she did not address the propagandistic impact of this, the world’s largest sporting event, nor did she focus on the fact that racism and anti-Semitism were put on hold for a few weeks: the dreadful “Stürmer” boxes disappeared from in front of city halls, and Jews and non-Jews were temporarily allowed to sit side by side on park benches again. Rather, she showcased the athletes’ physiques, which conformed to the Nazi ideal, as well as the monumental spectacle elements.
At 3 p.m. in the afternoon, Ms. Sahra Küpfer will play songs for Rosh Hashanah. According to Jewish custom, apple slices are dipped in honey and eaten so that the new year will be a sweet one. A piece of challah, a Jewish leavened braided bread, will also be served.
